BULLRUN (Speed TV): Ultimate How To Guide: Becoming a Bullrun Team.
Submitted by Aaron on Wed, 02/25/2009 - 10:02pm
I have noticed a huge increase in the number of people starting to ask HOW to get on the show? I don't know if I am the best person to tell you how to do it. I would guess that I am the one with the most experience at getting shut down and that has got to be worth something. So here is what I learned over the last 3 years of trying.
Here is the official word on getting your team and car in for consideration for season 3. This is Andy and Shaun's own words and no bull!@#$.
"How To Get On Bullrun III.. Casting will begin in April 2009.
1. Filming dates are not yet confrimed but you will need to be available for 3 weeks for filming in late summer 2009 if selected.
2. The miminum age requirement to participate in the show is 21 years old (at We consider ALL people and ALL cars, any background, any country.
3. Go to www.bullrun.com and set up a driver profile.
4. Enter all the information about you and your co-driver and your car. Add photos of you both and your car.
5. Upload a video of up to 5 minutes long (max) with you and your co-driver explaining, who you are, why you want to do Bullrun III etc. The more we know about you, your car and your personalities the easier it is for us to make a decision about you for the show.
6. If you're precious about damaging your car, don't bother applying! Go hard or go home!
Want to be a flag girl on the TV show? The same applies, go to the website set up a flag girl profile and tell us all about yourself."
Shaun posted this a few days ago. That is the official line but what it doesn't tell you is it really is going to take a huge effort to get known and be able to stand out from 12,000 other applicants who want one of 12 spots.
Part I: Just who does the casting and where do the teams come from?
The casting is done by a separate company. That company goes to every car site they can find and ask for people to enter the casting process. Look if there was 12,000 entries for this season and only two of the Teams picked were from the Bullrun.com site means 10 teams came from sites other than the Bullrun site.
Being part of the community is going to more than double your odds of being on the show. Having a B-Club profile increases your odds to 16.6% for getting on the show over the other car sites. If you take into account that there are only 1257 B-runners signed up as of the day I wrote this that would make your odds 628 to 1 that your going to make the cut and that is if every person on the site is able to meet the 7 official guide lines. Which isn't very unlikely.
So if you are going to try to increase your odds I would tell you to go to Streetfire.com or Cardomain.com and set up a great page and promote your car by being active on the forums. That should help you get noticed. I personally have my B-club profile, Cardomain and a Myspace page with Bullrun blog in order to increase my odds of getting on the show.
Part II: Pictures and Video
This is SO SO important. Remember that this is TV show and not radio show. So they need to see you, your co-driver and the car! Take your time and make sure the pictures are good and well done. If you think about this it should be a no brainer. You are selling your team and the car. I would take as many as is needed to get that money shot. I would think that your using a digital camera so it doesn't hurt to take three shots per angle. I would also change the place that your taking pictures. Try to show the car and your team in different lighting and settings. Your trying to make it as easy as you can on the casting department to picture you on the show. 12,000 teams thats 24,000 people and your only going to post one picture.. really get a grip. SELL SELL SELL.

Now for the video... I think this is were i screw up every time. It isn't easy and I really can't tell you what works best because mine always suck. I guess the best advice is to start early and edit it down to 5 min (MAX). If is more than that its going to bore them if they aren't all ready bored after 2 min. I am going try to think of my video this time around as a commercial selling my team. Try watching the past show teams videos to find a common element between them. Don't bore them try to keep it alive and for real. Fake is the easiest thing to spot and I have watched lots of B-club video's and just rolled my eyes. Not that I am an expert on making video's as I have already told you.
This is a very important part of getting on the show. So spend some time trying to get it right. Try to get to the spirt of your team and just why they can't live without you. You will be glad you did. (I should think.)
Part III: First contact, Freaking out and Over Selling!
Ok, they have found you and your team. You got an email and or a phone call from casting.. Your heart just explodes with excitement. I know it happens to me every time they call me. I think they just like f'in with me if I ever make the show I will ask Andy. So calm down your a long ways from getting to the starting line. You still have to prove to them that your "The" team and not just a team. They are going to ask for more information from you and then revaluate your potential for the show again. Don't lie! Tell them the truth. If you start lying your going to never make the show. You see they are going to do background checks and find out if your for real. As far as I know you don't have to be perfect just perfect for the show.
Now your still in early casting and just at the start of the questionaries. Each time they ask for something get it back asap.
Now, lets say your on to a phone interview with you, your team mate and a casting rep. He or she is there to see if you might fit for the show and have that energy they need for reality TV. If you have something that she likes they your going to move on up the pile. They will tell you if your out and thank you for trying out. They are a very nice professional group of people who want you to try again next time. If you do have that "something" they will ask you some more questions (this one is much more intrusive and much larger than the first packet) and IF you seem like a good fit. They are going to push you up to the Producers and Andy. If they like you then they will send you some disclosure paperwork with even more intrusive questions which are even larger than that last set. Again be honest they like you and you don't want to screw it up. This isn't a done deal you still have to have a face to face and lying again is the worst thing you can do.
NOTE: Don't start spending money on your car. Because you should have already done that before you started to enter this event. AND if you do and don't get picked it was you that was stupid. You can't blame anyone but yourself because that meant your car wasn't really ready to race and you lied! It has just come back to bite you. You and no one else. But you might want to do the basics just in case. BASICS are OIL - LUBE - SPARK PLUGS Only
Ok! Lets say you make the "Final 20" as some of us Superfans have named it. That means they are taking you and your car to the "starting city" for instance LA for season 2 teams. Your going to meet the people who are going to green light you. It isn't a done deal so so.. Well I don't know. You see I have never made it that far yet. I guess the only advice that I can give is do the same things that got you to there. Don't change for the sake of change they liked something in you and that should be enough.
Now if you go home at this point. You should remember you beat 11,980 other teams to be in the Final 20 and you can always try for next season. If you don't think that they are going to call you back just ask Team Pantera (Season 2 Team) they were sent home before the first season. They never stopped hoping to get that call back... They did and so can you.
Part IIII: Hotel and Racing
From what I have been told you sit in a cheap hotel and wait for the superpowers to name your team. If they want you they call and let you know if its thumbs up or ass out. I can only imagine the stress that those waiting must be facing. They must bounce off the walls until they get that word. And once the word is given it's racing my friends. I don't think those lucky 12's stress is over until they have won or been tossed their keys.
Final Note*
Its the goal you and I are wanting to do (or you wouldn't have read this whole wind bagged write up). So go get it done. Just remember that I am in that group of 11,980 teams that are waiting to run this incredible show. I think I am a little like Richard Rawlins and only want have some fun doing it faster than you. I want to be a part of this race and will always try to harder than you. Thats just me get use to it. It's nothing personal. I hope this helps you enjoy Bullrun a little more as you try to get on the show. It's a fun hobby if you just get to know the people in the forum. -Hope you make the Show- (after me that is)
