Just saw the Bullrun finalle on Speed. Brock's record was broken (30 hrs, 59 mins). I don't mean to be an ass but I'm gonna sound like one. I haul equipment off highway during the winter in Northern Canada (lowbed). 30 hour days are a common occurrence for me... by myself!!! People who have replaced me for a night or two have come out of the bush crying!!! I am also a veteran of one of Brock's One Lap of America races. I do not see what is so damn 'tough' about this measly 3000 mile Bullrun or why people would "Halucinate" during a measly 31 hour trip across the US. I sure hope the world is not turning into a bunch of wusses!!!

Basically, a 30+ hour stint across country at 70 MPH isn't a big deal.

But when you're clocking well into the triple digits almost the whole way, and trying not to get caught, arrested, etc. and have to track police scanners, radios, detectors, phones, and whatnot it gets pretty stressful.

The winning record averaged around 100MPH.... think about that.

If you are willing to put your money where your mouth is I'll set up a run from CT to LA (the real record route) and see if you can "hang with the big boys".

Cross country driving is 1 thing. Cross country driving full speed with no stop is another thing.

If you have the cahones I have the resources.

Sean, you're talking about the starting point in Darien, correct?

Cahones are never in short supply. Granted, full blast without getting caught is the hard part. 30 some hours with a driving partner just not that hard. In my last Cannonball we went four days and three nights straight to the mid way stop running competitive events through the entire distance, spent one night in a hotel and then the return journey. That was tough! Yeah, I know, it's all smack. By the way, I'd love to do it again... this time with resources!

I actually have the details already set up. It's just a matter of making it happen. I want to wait until the economy is better so more people will be able to do it.

Same thing for the NER cross country. I have it all planned out, but I want to give people time to recover from this crap before we do it. I'd rather 30 teams over 10 lol.

Now we're talking. An official attempt at the world record sounds great! Too bad half of us are going to end up in jail and nobody will be able to break the record (officially). Celebrating my 40th year on this planet in this manner is perfect. How does May 2010 sound? I don't need the economy to be better. I need time to screw together some Iron. I don't buy my junk, I build it.

PS

Can we keep the stickers to a minimum? That's the only way any of us may be able to have a fighting chance.

For the "underground run", originally it was scheduled for 1010, but It depends on how fast the economy swings at this point.

No stickers. No advertising and no one will even know when it is or the exact location of the start until a week before the event. You'll get the month of the run when you secure your spot and you'll get a 2 week window that you need to be prepared to leave. You'll get the exact date, location and time a few days before we leave. This will limit the chances of being shut down.

It will be invite only and I have people that will meet the participants ahead of time to talk to them and make sure they are going to be safe and are doing it for "the right reasons" not just to cause hell on the highways.

Most people like the idea and think they would do it. Then you start talking to them about what it really takes and they do a little bit of reseach about the people that have done it. Then they take a long hard look at if they can really handle it, afford it and if it's worth it. Next thing you know your participant list is a fraction of what you planned.

You also have to make it a run that has no prize. This also chops the participants to people that are in it for the adventure and possible bragging rights. If there is a big cash prize you will bring peopel that are in it for the wrong reasons.

For the NER cross country we will be all about visibility lol. Stickers, media, video cameras and anyone 18+ can come. That one will most likely be 1011 if things turn around for the economy this year.

I know for sure cost would be an inhibitor for me... if it weren't for that, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Seriously.

Well.. Here are a few things ponder.

Are you doing it to come in first or for the experience?

Have you ever driving across the country?

Do you know a route? Is that route under construction? Do you have a back up route incase the started construction yesterday?

Is your car ready for the ride?

Are YOU ready for the ride?

Are you SURE your car is ready for the ride?

Can you afford gas to cross the country at high speeds? Can you afford gas home after?

Have you ever been in a car for 30+ hours without getting out other than for gas?

If not then you may want to reconsider it before trying to do an event like this.

If you get clocked at 150 and the lights come on... do you stop or run?

If you stop can you afford the HUGE ticket and possible jail time and loss of your car?

Who else would be effected?

Is it worth it?

If you run and get caught what will you lose by going to jail for evading police, driving to endanger, Criminal speeding, and all the other charges that would come from it as well as your car being crushed?

Who else would be effected?

Is it worth it?

Also...

Some cars that you will be driving against will be built for speed and they will have radar detectors, laser jammers, cbs, police scanners, night vision cameras and internet access running up to the minute traffic reports and speed drap updates. Some may even have decoys running ahead to spot for speed traps.

They will be leading the pack. If you are not in the front of the pack you will be in their wake. Do you have a plan to avoid detection? Changing a route will change your time line. Slowing down will as well.

Do you still think you will win? If not will you finish the ride or just go home because you won't win?

Do you plan on driving the entire ride or will your co driver drive?

Can you enter an event like this and know 100% that you will put safety for the people around you before absolutely anything else even your own.

Now have your co driver anser these same questions.

Do you still want to do it?

Like I said, it will be a great way to celebrate my 40th year on this planet. And yeah, a good portion of those involved usually end up in front of a Judge. The only thing I'm worried about is getting my slightly fatter ass in better shape for this. For me, it's personal. I like to think I'm still 20 years old. It's for the experience. I don't need to win but you can bet your ass I won't be a pushover. I'm really busy starting Jan 3rd until April 1st but can do any meetings after that up till any point before the go date, in the event you want me to go through some sort of psychological analysis. Brock's been avoiding this original race since the early 70's and I don't honestly think the 'official' record can be broken... but I sure as hell am willing to try!! Invite me and I'll be there.

PS. Is the official record still the one from 1979?

Depends on who you ask lol.

32 hours 7 minutes was set by David Diem and Doug Turner during the US Express in 1983.

Richard Rawlings and Dennis Collins, beat that in 2007 while in the Bullrun. They split off the Bullrun because they made a beat with a fellow rallier that they could beat the record for $50,000.00. Time was 31 hours 59 minutes.

Alex Roy then announced that he did the run a year earlier, but kept it quiet so he would have the statute of limitations run up. His time was 31 hours 4 minutes in 2006, but kept quiet for a year and it's been verified that he did it. There is a lot of info out there about Alex's run if you do a search.

Just been busy working my ass off for the last five years and have been unable to follow most of this for quite some time now. Being in Northern Canada doesn't help much either. Saw the Richard Rawlings/ Dennis Collins one but wasn't sure what is official or not. I take it the Alex Roy one is the one to beat unless someone else has a secret out there. Guess I'll just wait for the invite. One other thing. Why not have it while the entire North American economy is in the tank? If everybody is broke then there should be less vehicles on the road and all of our chances to beat the record should increase!! lol.
