Automotive Trivia for you....
Wed, 10/07/2009 - 2:21pm
This is a list of automotive related questions I made up last year for a group of students in a College Automotive Class. Whoever got the most questions right got intense ride in my 67 Tempest with burnouts and the works.
Automotive Trivia for you.
Answer the questions without going to the web. Test your true automotive knowledge
Feel free to add more questions to the list.
1. In what year did Chevrolet introduce what we now know as the small block Chevy engine ? Production of the original small-block began in 1955 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_small-block_engine
2. What cars are known as the Tri-Five Chevy’s ? 55,56,57 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1sHEreVVD8
3. In what year was the first Corvette introduced ? 1954 (1953
As introduced in 1953, the Corvette was mostly a thrown together experiment. Production was limited to 300 units total, so sales of the entirely new model was not a problem.
The first Corvette reaches the end of the assembly line on June 30, 1953. The first 15 cars were built, all by hand, in the back of a customer delivery garage in Flint Michigan. The rest came from a new facility devoted to Corvettes in St. Louis which had a capacity to build 10,000 cars a year. The first two were engineering test cars and according to official records, were destroyed. Of the first 300 Corvettes, approximately 225 are known to exist today.
All 1953 Corvettes were Polo White with a red interior and a black canvas top. There were two options offered: a signal seeking AM radio ($145.15) and a heater ($91.40). Although listed as options, all 1953 Corvettes were equipped with both items. The base price was $3,498.00, including the federal excise tax and $248.00 for shipping and handling. The radio had an interesting feature: since fiberglass is electrically inert, the antenna was simply incorporated in the trunk lid. This would not be possible with a conventional steel body.
4. What does E.T. mean when applied to drag racing ? Elapsed time: the time it takes a vehicle to travel from the starting line to the finish line. Also called e.t.

Brian... surely with all that detailed info on the early corvettes you would have mentioned that the OPTIONAL hardtop was also called the Bubbletop... especially in 53-4-5. (ps... I may be wrong that the hardtop was an option but fairly confident)
Also the 53 corvette was the first production year. I'm not doubting the info you posted, but it was definately NOT like the '83 corvette. Those were two totally different situations although it's being portrayed as the same scenario. Maybe I misunderstood?
In '54 you had color options... Sportsman Red, Pennant Blue, and Black in addition to the White. There was also an optional Beige interior but only available with Pennant Blue exterior.
Also in '54 the air cleaner changed and the HP went from 150 to 155... although that didn't happen until later in the 54 production year.
One more tid bit.... How ironic that the '55 corvette featured the optional V8 (small block) from your #1 question... 265 correct? That is why you began seeing the larger "V" in the emblems on V8 models.
How do I know all this? LOL... I have a 1960 corvette. If you want a challenge, try to spot the difference in a 59-60 corvette.
All in all great thread and I actually learned a few things from your questions.

Oops.. forgot to mention....
Although you are 100% correct onthe Bubbletop question. Another car came to mind when I read that. I can't remember the year or make but I remember seing pictures on more than one occasion and also seen it on My Classic Car. There were actually 2 bubble like humps on the roofline where driver and passenger would sit.
Do you know anything about what car this might be?

You have me on all the corvette facts. I have only ever owned one corvette. It was a 63 Roadster. I knew for a fact that 53 was the first one, but all the other details you mentioned are not familiar to me. I will leave it to you educate me on those facts. Im always up for learning more facts. I dont remember mentioning anything about the 1983 model year corvette as you indicated ? so Im not sure what thats all about.
As for the Bubbletop question I posted it was only familiar to me regarding the Impala's because I owned two 61 Impalas a few years back. A true SS and a sweet impala.
This was the only time I knew of "Bubbletop" being referenced to a car. Guess I was only partly right then...?
The car you mentioned that had a bubble above both passenger and driver I believe was either a prototype or it was a Ford Skyliner / Starliner, with a glass top ? I will be looking it up soon.

LOL... no prob Whiskey, just thought I'd throw a few things out there.
The way I understood your descriptionof the 53 eas very similar to what happened in 83. I was just making that association. There was NO 83 production year. Like the 64 Mustang, it was actually an 84 model that came out earlier than noromal. However the 53 was it's own production year and not an early 54.
So... yes 53 was the first year for corvette.
The double bubble top I was thinking of I still can't remember but I did find another car with it.
