Ouch! Any photos Mike?

I didn't think that the decals were supposed to rip off the paint. That is no good at all.

wow that sucks, maybe we should do  post about how to properly take the decals off. is there something to use or a specific way?

I had that happen to the Thunderbird I was driving in NY.  Pulled off paint & all on the shield on the drivers pillar.

Yeah that is why I laid down about 4 coats of wax before I applied them.   Probably should have used a heat gun or hair dryer.   The stickers on the hood pretty much came off ok..  but I couldn't get the outline off with out buffing.

That happenend to a few of the NER Rally folks when they placed the damn car domain stickers on the paint too.

yeah, there is a lot of glue left on the car.  I need to use the goo gone to get the glue off tomorrow.

It isn't the biggest problem in the world, but I will be out a few hundred to get the door repainted.

sorry to hear about your paint problems Mike.  Maybe the excessive heat from the rotary engine caused your problems.

No problems removing the decals here. Just a bit of residue around thte edges. Used goo-b-gone to remove it then a good cleaning and now a wax job.  Probably best to use a hair dryer to warm the decals up a bit to remove them. I started removing them from the GN yesterday and dont seem to be having any problems there either. The secret is a good wax job before installing the decals. 

The Camaro looks bare now without the decals. Just another normal Camaro now..... :(

yeah, I was a bit weak on the wax job.  The weird part is every decal came off fine then one of the last ones ripped off the paint.

OMG that car domain was perminant vinyl. One guy put it on the hood and it peeled off down to the metal. I felt so bad for him, but I did say to put the CD stickers on glass.

We use removable vinyl for the NER decals and I still suggest that people remove then when the car is warm.

sorry to hear that mike...must be the bad jap. paint jap. companys have used for year... go german next time and you wont have that problem

 

Its a rotory.. buy a true v6 or v8 and they give betterpaint jobs on the cars..

Ouch! So if you made your car #87 then you wouls have never had that problem.

SO the area where the decals were are still visible because the car is dirty? Or because that's the residue left behind?

Yeah, dirt and residue.   I have since gotten all the residue off and washed the car.  

I test drove a Mazada6 along with my Scion. I'm glad to see I made the right choice. :)

Hey Mike!

I just called my cardiologist and cancelled my STRESS TEST!

 After reading you post I RAN to my garage to start taking the decals off the Panoz! 

I am thrilled to report that they came off without any problems!  And here is a PLUG for Black Magic remember the little cans of wax they handed out at the beggining of the BullRun in NYC?  Well it took off all (there wasn't that much) the residue from the decals.  I am very sorry and upset about your paint.

That sucks. Sometimes that happens when you install decals. Any imperfections in the paint can cause issues. I suggest to anyone mounting decals next time to wax the surface and clean below. Using a heat gun can help, however you will be left with a ton of glue on the car afterwards. That is always the risk of mounting decals. Hope you can get it fixed Mike! 

 

Did you buy the car brand new Mike? That shouldn't happen with any adhesive..... bug and tar remover from 3M should work the best for removing the rest of the adhesive without damaging the rest of the paint. Apparently the primer was sanded coarse enough before the paint..... but it does appear you're right and it only took off the clear coat... That's very odd to see the clear come off like that even if the base wasn't prepped.

The car was bought used and that door was 'blended' when I bought it since they had to fix the rear fender and paint it.

Sorry to see that man. Gotta be real careful when a car has been repainted. Sometimes they just don't do a good prep job and the paint lifts with the decal. Always best to use a hair dryer or heat gun to warm up the decal first before trying to remove. In most cases the glue residue very minimal when it's properly warmed up before hand. I can't wait to get my car back and get the decals off and redo it like it was for the show.

Mike, I am sorry to hear that happen to you....If it was the factory paint that came off I could get you the right numbers to mazda warranty claims department, but since it was blended there is nothing that I can do....

With any stickers that have been on any of my cars, I wait till a warm summer day to take them off, I mean like 90 degrees in the afternoon....come off like a charm.....

You should put wood panelling on top of it.....it would ocver up the issue

Thanks man.  Yeah, I should have done it when it was warmer, but the paint was pretty mixed into the sticker.  Stupid cheap paint.

That sucks man, sounds like the dealership that you got the car from used what we call at the dealership "bumper gypsys".....basically guys who go around airbrushing scratches and what not.....they use the thinnest layer of paint and the cheapest clear that they can get their hands on....looks good, but chips away quick....instead of their bodyshop

 I know a good body shop you should take it to they do an awesome job....Hi-Tech Collision that is!! In Rolla Missouri and you will get a good deal if you tell them you know me ;)   but I'm sorry bout that it really sucks
