I wanted to explain our brief and recent absence from the forums. My grandfather passed away a week ago and we have been quite busy with family issues.
Dillard F. Pierce Jr. was 84. In world war 2 he was an instructor and trained many men to go to fight. Ultimaltly he went with the last group he trained to fight in the south pacific. He went on invasions, and helped to build airstrips on the islands that were captured. While in Manilla fighting, he lost his left leg. 22 surgeries and a year later he left the hospital in Battlecreek Michigan, which at the time was the largest facility for prosthetics and amputees.
He had met and fell in love with my grandmother before he went to war, but decided that it would be selfish to marry her and leave behind a widow if he were killed so he waited until his return. They were married 62 years when grandma died a year ago.
My grandfather farmed when he returned from the war. He then went on to run and later own successful jewelry stores in Ohio, but the weather got to him due to arthritic complications from using a prosthesis, so at about the age of 40 he picked up and brought the family to Phoenix, where he owned and ran 2 stores successfully until he tried retiring the first time. Retirement never really took with grandpa. He tried 4 times unsuccessfully.
He loved to travel, he loved to converse, and he loved to drive or fly anything he could get his hands on. He was a SPEED DEMON. Always loved detroit V8s. And he learned to drive a stick with one leg.
He was always a gentleman and he was always honest and honorable. He was a true hero in every sense of the word. He is the end of an era for our family, and one of the last of that greatest generation. He leaves behind a great legacy, and will be missed.
I reckon he's still cheering you on, Casey! Just with some sorely missed company!

Thank you Thurman. I am sure he is. He taught me to drive at 12 in the desert in an old VW bug. Kept telling me to go faster. I recon he still is.

Casey, Honey, You know it has taken me a bit to be able to be online, as this holiday was a busy one with my grandson living with me, and getting Tommy home as an unplanned surprise. You already know how much we love you, and how sorry we are, and you know if you need to have a shoulder, mine is here. I miss you and will call, just wanted you to know you are thought of. How is your ear coming along?? (Casey blew out an ear drum, really bad, and is on antibiotics now) I hope you are feeling better.
