Season 1 had: race leg, challenge (where teams swapped first leg times if slower time beat faster time), then race leg, with slowest going home.
Season 2 had: race leg, race leg, challenge (with slowest of 3 in challenge going home).
Seems like the first season made the navigation more important, because even if you sucked in the challenge, you still had a chance to make up for it in the final leg of the day. In the second season, navigation was also important, but how you performed in the challenge seemed to be more of an issue (i.e. who'd have thought the Porsche would have gone home first in the "Bus takedown" challenge? Miss a shift and you're out!)
So, which would you prefer to do? Which seems more difficult overall?

Season two made for better TV in my opinion.

it also made the challenges more important because they would bring with them an elimination. In season one you still could come back if you lost the challenge and get a better time. I think it was just cooler that their asses were on the line when they were competeing in the challenges. It made them try harder, abuse their cars more, wreck (evo) etc etc.

My only issue with the Season two format was that the Leg had much less importance then in season 1. Season Elvis and Steve went shopping and it really didn't matter. In season one the 57's guy takes a dump and that dump sent that team packing.

Damn good point.
I kind of like the way the last challenge went. Maybe they could do a hybrid of those 2 seasons.
The last 2 teams are automatically in the challenge. The first place team picks the 3rd team to go into the challenge.
First place in the challenge gets 15 minutes taken off their time, second place gets 10, third place gets 0. Team with the slowest time after the time bonuses are awarded goes home.
Only issue I see with it is if the time bonuses won't be enough to save a team, or if the team chosen has such a large lead over the other 2 that they don't need any time to stay ahead..
See, even typing that all out seems to over complicate it. But it sure does seem like there should be more importance put on the daily leg section.. I just can't seem to figure out how to do it.
Maybe still give the 15 and 10 minute time bonuses, but apply them to the next day. So, if you get 1st place in the challenge, you get to leave 15 minutes before the competition (I know they are staggered starts, but give a 15 minute bonus on top of the staggered start times). That way, the team that did well in the challenge would stand a better chance of not being throw back into another challenge the next day. Seems like it would help keep the winner a rotating position, thereby allowing the different teams a chance to throw eachother into the challenge... Should make for great TV, and huge drama!!

Maybe, like the last leg, there should be built in handicaps to the challenges in season 3.
Last place team = no bonus
2nd last place team = -3 seconds
Team picked for Challenge = -6 seconds

Maybe I am reading this wrong... but taking time away from the challenge folks is pointless their time for the day is done. If you come in last in the challenge your still going home.
Bring back the time bonuses man! Or make it a token to be exempt from the challenge period. That would be enough to spice it up... to make teams go after something.. to find nothing.. because only 1 team got it.. or 2 teams in the beginning..etc.
There just is no emphasis put into the driving legs anymore. You can get lost, whatever.. but still recover in the challenge.. as Avi did time and time again....
Or have it, the time bonuses are credit minutes, seconds etc to the challenge time if you get put in.. kinda like an insurance policy... ( still like the token idea better)
Also, get rid of the uncontrolled stunt car dirt track crap. If that was left out, the solstice would have been top 3. They used a car that continually detriorated each time the ran the challenge.
Dirt is cool... but not when your driving a car that is 3 inches off the ground... I couldn't have imagined watching the Ferrari do the challenge that the Dart, Bus, and Avi did... it would have been catastrophic for that car... it would have been scooping dirt the entire time.

I didn't particularly care for the idea that the challenge determined who went home. Bullrun was about your overall time from point A to point B. I guess I would lean toward Season 1 format but surely there are some ideas out there that will give us an all new Season 3 format.

I kind of agree with GTO - the challenges ARE important, but they shouldn't be what sends a person home. I think it should be a chance for the guys in behind to catch up - time bonuses as rewards would be the way to do that, then kick the person with the slowest time. Be kinda cool if, in S3, they decided to do scavenger hunts for time bonuses - not necessarily anything that takes the contestents out of their way, but say maybe the guy standing on the corner in Winslow had a 10 minute bonus under foot. For the dirt challenges - it would be one thing if it was a flat course - that moto cross course woulda completey ruined quite a few of the contestents, and while I and my dad are well used to driving dirt and gravel, it's gonna suck bad if we lose a muffler, or worse yet - the oil pan, because of the challenge they made us run.

I agree that sending someone home based solely on how they do in a challenge is silly. Like it was said, challenge results being time penalties and then sorting it from there is better.

Sounds like making the CHALLENGE worth some time bonus. Not sure how that could be factored into the equation in a fair way but it's interesting to think about. The last place teams would take part in the challenge to get say... 10-20 min. of time bonus deducted fromoverall leg time. Then the final tally would get mixed up a biot unless the last teams were SO LAST that the bonus wouldn't help enough
Hmmm... lets see now..... if I take my time and finish in last but less than 5 min behind everyone.... I could win the challenge and move into 5th or 6th position. Do I take the risk? Is it really worth it?
ONE MORE NOTE: I think there should be some sort of staggered departure on the next leg based on your overall time from the previous day. If youare 2 hours behind on leg 3 and manage to win the challenge... is it fair that youstart off fresh and new with everyone else the next day? Sholdn't you have to perform better on trhe next leg to "catch up" so to say? I'm not saying the full 2 hours but possibly some sort of time penalty for being in the bottom of the pack. I think it would create more competition and desire to NOT be at the bottom.

Season 2 episodes would only be interesting after 30 mins of the show...road trip not all that interesting exept for the Bama boys trying shortcuts or when everybody stopped at a wedding chapelle. Not much suspense until we know who wins the leg and who is in the challenge. It'was great after when team Bama and Team Strange would recite poetry to each other. Different challenge with different skilled required made the outcome impossible to know... The Blind driving , the lake Powell or dirt road jail escape and bazooka weren't won buy the most powerfull cars .
Season one was good the entire episode , but the eliminations were certainly less dramatic... I aslo liked those detour time bonuses that could be from 5 mins to 45 mins and more!
So a hybrid of both season would be nice...

I liked how in season 2 the challenge gave the teams a chance to redeam therselves and the teams had to depend on there car and there driving skills more but i would like to see more of the navigater haveing to drive for part of the challange like avi were in nearly every challange but we never seen how matt could drive.
