A FAQ thread to help with repeat posts. Note; sources used are either producers, or contestants. Very few are from other sources. None is from myself, I am no expert, so don’t ask me.
About
This show format is a 'spin off' and based on the legendary Bullrun Rally. It is a totally separate event as 12 teams with their cars compete for $200,000 worth of cash and prizes over 4,000 miles in a 10 episode reality elimination TV show.
This is show free to applicants if selected for the TV show. Individuals who want to be Contestants or Flag Girls in this show can set up Driver or Flag Girl profiles on this website and will automatically be considered for the show.
Bullrun was produced by Bullrun Productions, Maloof Television and Rocket Science Laboratories. Season One was produced for Spike. Season Two was produced for Speed Channel, with original airings from February through April 2009.
Entering
How Do I enter to be on the show?
-Go to www.bullrun.com and set up a driver profile.
Enter all the information about you and your co-driver and your car. Add photos of you both and your car.

How do you find cars?
-They search the forum profiles for casting.
-Forums on the net
-Random people
-Fortune cookies
When will it be?
-“Late summer”
How old do you have to be?
-You need to be 21 during filming.
Do I need to be a US citizen?
-No, it is open to anyone, as long as you have the needed documents to drive in the USA.
Does my car need to be a show car?
-“I don’t care about the condition of the cars....just the drivers.”- Andy
When does casting start?
-The producer has stated in April, but it is subject to change. It will become very noticeable when it starts if you check into this site.
How long should the video be?
-Less then 5 minutes.
What should be in the Video?
-You and your co-driver explaining, who you are, why you want to do Bullrun III etc.
What are you looking for in the videos?
-According to the producer “The absolute main thing is your personalities - the more you can get this across the better, you can do this anyway way you want in your audition video. After that it's a question of us looking at the all the teams we like and fitting them into a final 12 that will work together for a show.”
Where Do I send Videos?
-Videos should be posted to your profile, sent to via email to bullruncasting@gmail.com and optionally hosted online on a site like youtube.com etc.
How do I make a video?
-There are several commercially available programs like Microsoft and Adobe that will make this task easier.
Who does the casting?
-Metal Flowers is the casting company run by Kristi Russell. They narrow down the list of candidates based on criteria the producers give them. Then the producers David Green and Andy Duncan (cousins) pick the final teams for the show.
How long will I have to prepare?
- Once you make the final 20, you might only have a couple days.
The Competition (general)
Is this a race?
-No it is a rally. A race is about speed, and very hard to insure. A rally is about time, and speeding is not allowed.
How long does it last?
-Three weeks from start to finish.
Is speeding allowed?
-In the reality show speeding is not allowed. due to liability. Contestants are penalized by production staff once warned to slow down by the chase car.
But I saw them speeding on TV…
What happens if I get a ticket or get arrested during the show?
-If it is related to your driving/ behavior during a leg you are kicked off. If it happens off camera (non-challenge related), its okay.
Whose car will I be using?
-You will be driving your own cars for the vast majority of the time.
Will my car be damaged?
-Entirely possible. “If you're precious about damaging your car, don't bother applying! Go hard or go home!”
Do I have to have insurance, or will the show provide it?
-You must have your own insurance for the event. Check with your company for coverage.
How much does it cost?
-Nothing to enter. Teams are responsible for food and gas. A $50 daily stipend is provided currently.
Can I listen to the radio, iPod, walkman etc in the car?
-No. There are two reasons: 1) No electronic aids are allowed. A traffic report would fall into this. 2) Its a TV show where in car conversations are recorded. Having an important event happen when an unedited song was on would make that recording useless. Even regular songs would prevent a clean recording from taking place.
Can I drive with my windows, sunroof or top open?
-No for the same reasons above, it makes recording difficult.
Can the team change who drives?
-Yes, either driver can drive in a leg or challenge. It might change next season though.
When can I get fuel?
-Teams are only allowed to get fuel during the legs of the challenge 99% of the time.
Can I use gas cans?
-No gas cans are allowed in the cars in season 2.
Can I use an enlarged super big gas tank?
-In season 2 fuel cells were allowed, and made a big difference for teams. There might be a change for season 3.
Can I use GPS?
-No GPS is allowed, of any sort
My car has a radio with navigation installed.
-We would disable it
Can I bring maps?
-No, all maps must be purchased during the event.
Can I use maps purchased earlier?
-Maps purchased in an earlier leg may be used throughout the event.
Can I use a map on my computer?
-No computers are allowed, even to tune your car.
But I’ve got a small computer device to tune it, so it’s okay right?
-No, No, No, producers are not going to take the time to go through the specifics on each device and figure it out. If it’s any sort of computer, it’s out.
Can I sabotage competitor’s cars?
-No, You can't generally interfere with someone else's car
Can I make phone calls?
-No phone calls are allowed outside of one, one minute monitor phone call the entire time. You will be out of contact.
What if I break down?
-During challenge, time continues. All cars must start/ finish the race under the cars power, or the teams.
-Outside the challenge, no penalty, but the car must be fixed by the start of the next challenge or leg.
Am I allowed to bring spare parts?
-Yes, spare fluids and parts are highly recommended.
Where are spare parts kept?
-Spares can be kept in the chase vehicle.
How many spare tires am I allowed?
-“Probably 2 spare tires next season” –Andy
Can I bring tools?
-This is also highly recommended, and can be kept in your car or the chase car.
The Competition (challenges)
Can I practice the challenge first?
-No, but you will be walked/ driven through it first.
Can other team drive the challenge for fun?
-No.
Are the teams allowed to adjust their suspension before challenges?
-Yep. But you still have to be ready for the challenge, we won't wait for you.
Can I remove low spoiler (or other ground effects) before any off road challenges?
-Its up to you, you would need to be ready for the challenge like the above question.
Is time stopped while I get my safety equipment on?
-No, you might want to practice. You cannot start driving in a challenge until it is all go to go also.
What happens if a car is damaged during or after a challenge?
-Then that car becomes the eliminated car (subject to Andy's prerogative)
Other
Show Editing
-The show was made by Bullrun Productions...we are using our edit suites (owned by Zero DB / Giant Film - they are the same thing) in London - we are actually editing the show in the UK (as we speak).
Goldberg Voice over
-The VO is done with Goldberg from an ISDN link from a sound studio in California that has a direct live link with the edit facility in London.
Are the shows available on DVD?
-Season one is available for download at amazon.com. Season 2 is not yet available.
Event tips from Team olds member Richard (S1):
- Reliability, car engine was dynoed, the car was nearly fully restored, and it was for all practical purposes a new car.
- Powerful brakes for slowing down from 150+mph (blame Jegs for screwing us up on that one, they sent us the wrong calipers)
- Ridiculous acceleration (monster motor and two tanks of N20)
- The best wet weather street legal (barely) race tires money can buy they would last for just as long as we needed them to(we knew we would be up against at least one AWD car, so we offset that disadvantage with great tires.)
- Spare tires....4000 miles, very good chance you will have an issue especially with soft gummy hi-po tires.
- The best window wipers; it was fall; you know you are going to run into rain and sleet.
- A way to piss without having to stop, this is a no brainer!
- Flash-lights...you need to read maps, fix the car at night....who knows! It’s a must.
- Octane boost for the !@#$ gas out west...high compression, need da boost.
- Aerodynamics for more fuel efficiency...you might laugh but every little bit counts, we spent a few grand designing the headlight covers and two different rear spoilers. The big pro-touring one we had made never got installed since we didn't have time to concoct a mounting that wouldn't need to do any permanent mods to the car.
- Fuel cell....again a no brainer....we did not have time to finish this up.....but S2 has had almost 3 freaking years every car in this show should have extra fuel capacity!!!!!!!!!
- Auxiliary lighting for the inevitable moonless nights in the desert.....c'mon you can’t drive if you can’t see.
- Spare parts....driving a special car, well you need to have special parts that you won’t find at Pep-Boys.

Are the rules posted somewhere on the internet?
No, some rules are laid out on the show, some are made clear to the contestants and some are only known by the production staff.
*must be 21 to apply, no exceptions
Who pays for gas, food, lodging?
Not entirely certain, but from what I've seen, in season 2, you had a budget of $50 a day to pay for food and gas, the rest is on u. When on set, there is some food provided and lodging was covered by production as well.

Currently the Age is set at 21.
Do I need Car insurance to participate in Bullrun?
Yes. Call your insurance company to see if they would cover you.. make sure they know IT IS NOT A RACE.

So Gas cans are eliminated - are spare fluids other than gas legal for competition (Oil, Coolant, Brake fluid, P/S fluid?)
-Reason I ask is that storage for all the above (including extra gas) is built into my vehicle - The gas storage is seperate from the actual fuel system tho.

On the rally our fluids(Brake fluid, oil, etc) was kept in the chase vehicle. Additional gas was a no go.

Gotcha. I have all of it built in (the gas cans are removable) for shows and truck runs - Gets me extra points in judging at shows, and you never know whan you'll need the stuff!
Another Q - I have a full tool set stored in the truck in custom made bed compartments, and my air ride system is set up so I can run tools off it just like in a full auto shop - is that legal? Probably hasn't ever come up lol but figure I should ask...

Yeah I can't imagine anyone entering this event without the know-how & tools/parts to fix thier ride on the fly! The best built car could have something totally unexpected happen and if you aren't prepared for repairs, you're screwed!
I couldn't believe what I saw in Season one where Team Charger didn't know how to adjust timing for altitude... that cost them everything and I wouldn't want to make the same mistake.

We actually dis some pretty severe repairs that would have eliminated us from the game had we not had the know-how to repair it ourselves,
Lake Powel- Cold weather caused an intake gasket to crack....made gasket & changed. Bill T's love for burnouts & dislike for tight bolts caused 2 bolts to come loose on the motor that hold it to the tranny All fixed by ourselves, then jumped on Pantera repairs.
New Mexico State penn- Rebuilt Master Cylinder in the parking lot. It was freaking FREEZING!!!!!!!

As far as insurance goes, most state that they will cover events etc that are not timed / competition runs. My guess is that even if they do you'll have a hell of a time getting coverage if you crash especially during a challenge. We had a local guy roll his STI on a lapping day 2 summers ago; since it wasn't a timed competition he had a leg to stand on; I don't recall but I think he got covered but not without a fight. So be prepared for that.

Oh and NissanDragger: I know it's hard to see it because those old forums are... um... gone... but Mike explained that the issue with his car was a stuck float. So besically what would have happened would be the carb just DUMPING fuel into the engine. Once he let off the gas, flooded out the engine.

The twitter channel @BullrunOnSPEED has sent me a direct message stating that the age limit is 18+ and casting begins in May. I'd still like to hear something from Andy himself though.

Been working trying to get the $$ for the rally together. May or may not happen. That plus sister had a baby, and father in law went down hard on his harley and had surgery.
Replied to the message about the 18 years issue. I will change the info when we get it finalized.

Any rules that apply to us having our own sponsers and vinyls? I know we have to make room for bullrun vinyls but I would like to have sponser vinyls on the car as well.

No outside sponsor decals, they will be removed when they prep the car for the show. You might get away with a local shop logo or something like that, but generally, no sponsor stickers will stay.
